Kilmarnock Centre Details
About Us
The Kip McGrath centre opened in Kilmarnock in September 2003 and is open
Monday to Thursday from 4pm until 8.30pm, and a Saturday morning from
10am until 1pm.
Before any pupil attends the centre we do a full assessment. This gives us the
information to discuss any educational difficulties with the parents and to give
out recommendations. After this an individualised programme is drawn up. All our tutors are fully qualified teachers.

What We Do
Students attend the centre once a week for one hour and 20 minutes.
Each student works on his or her own programme, independent of others. Each tutor has maximum of 5 students, but more often than not this maximum is 4. The children are motivated by the sessions as each lesson is planned in small steps so that the student makes progress and feels good about it. Anything not understood can be explained as often as necessary. The students's confidence grows as he/she experiences success.
There is no competition with others.
Who comes to the centre?
* Pupils who need help with reading.
* Pupils who have a spelling problem.
* Pupils who want to move up a group in Maths or English.
* Pupils who find written expression difficult.

Other Courses
Two new courses are being offered in 2008, a Pre-School course for those
about to attend school for the first time and an Essay writing course for senior pupils, students in further education, and anyone who may feel need to improve their writing skills.
Get Ready for School
The “Get Ready for School” programme is a gentle introduction to learning which aids the transition from pre-school to Primary. The 10 week programme develops hand-eye coordination, computer use, gross motor skills and colour sense. Pre-schoolers finish the course with an increased understanding of sharing, teamwork, listening and following instructions.
Children will learn to write and to recognise their own names, in addition to learning the alphabet and counting from one to ten.
Essay Writing
A ten lesson course where students gain an understanding of the essay writing process from analysing the question through to editing the final draft.
Emphasis is placed on the planning process so that students become confident essay writers.
